I've fully restored a 1967 3hp Evinrude Lightwin o.b. motor. When test running the motor, it would not run properly, after inspecting the spark plugs I discovered water in the cylinders. I found no obvious reasons why.
Need help!

Probably the first thing I would do is check your compression to see if the head has a leak. Best of luck. Rick.

Bad head gasket would be a likely culprit..

Darn nothing is ever easy. Your compression numbers seem fine to me, in fact quite good. Next step I would do is replace the exhaust cover gasket or at least tighten your exhaust cover screws. When it was running were you seeing white smoke/vapor? Rick.

I suspected a cracked head, so I swapped it out with a new one. No dice!

Is it alot of water, or just tiny droplets on the plugs?

enough that it was visible on the pistons.

Hope you didn't run it long without water. Not a good idea at all but it helps prove water intrusion for sure. What about those exhaust cover ideas? Rick.

Thanks Rick, ran it only for a second or two for confirmation that water was the issue.
As for the exaust cover, the gasket is new installed with gasket sealer, pretty sure it had a good seal. If not how would that cause the problem at hand, eh.

do any of the head bolts protrude into the water jacket on those motors?

Silly question, but you are positive the fuel does not have water in it>???? I have gotten bad gas before.

Are you sure you didn't get the head gasket in upside down or flipped?

No? I positioned the gasket so the head bolts fit through. But could it be backwards or upside down? I'm not sure!
How do I tell? Could this cause the problem? sorry for the delay,
