Can someone advise me as the engineers manual is not clear how many degrees before top dead centre to set the mark when putting the distributor cap back on.

The cap only fits one way on the distributor. Or are you trying to install the distributor and wanting to know where to position the rotor?

According to my engine workshop manual for the 431 engine, similar to your AQ205, the rotor should be positioned between No 1 & 6 HT lead, before it is installed. I guess this means that when it is installed, the rotor points close to the No 1 HT lead, because it rotates a bit, when the bevel gear engages.

Your cylinder No 1 should of course be at TDC on the compression stroke, when installing the distributor.

The picture here gives a good view of the orientation.

When installed like this, you should be able to start the engine an adjust the timing ( 8? BTDC at idle, 750 rpm)
