According to my engine workshop manual for the 431 engine, similar to your AQ205, the rotor should be positioned between No 1 & 6 HT lead, before it is installed. I guess this means that when it is installed, the rotor points close to the No 1 HT lead, because it rotates a bit, when the bevel gear engages.
Your cylinder No 1 should of course be at TDC on the compression stroke, when installing the distributor.
The picture here gives a good view of the orientation.
When installed like this, you should be able to start the engine an adjust the timing ( 8? BTDC at idle, 750 rpm)
