Engine runs ok. Very good compresson in all cyliders. Carbs have been taken apart and cleaned. Have not had a chance to put boat in water. However when running on the trailer i get a popping out od the exhaust. When running at 2800 on trailer. Still have some popping. What would cause this?

There is a difference between popping and backfiring. When run on the trailer, the engine sounds as if it has high compression-as is indicated by a staccato firing of the plugs. Not unlike a popping sound. That's normal. You should be able to distinguish the differrence if it were backfiring-a much more violent popping. That could be an indication the engine is firing out of time.
