For the most part, no its not a problem to fish in the rain.... Many fiberglass boats have self bailing decks that drain overboard on their own, and most boats of all types have at least one bilge pump to rid the hull of water. If you are fishing in a little jon boat with no bilge pump in it, then i suggest you bring a plastic cup, or even a clorox bottle with the top cut off so you can bail the boat if the rain is really heavy.

What type of boat are we talking about here?

Some of the best fishing I've had is in the rain. Boats are made to get wet, they just need to be given a chance to dry out completely lwhen you get home.

I do it all the time. I've found that fish tend to bite well in the rain.

Just wondering if boat will collect water.

Water collecting in the boat should be no problem for you, just remove the "drain plug" and let it run out.

Most boats will drain well when on plane.

Rain with no lightning is perfect fishing weather.

As some have said fishing in the rain is great. Just no lightning. Old coffee can or milk jug will work, that's what my dad had me on board for as a kid. Now that I have my own boat, I'm lazy it's a bilge pump. But haven't had that problem in Kansas lately no rain. But about to get slammed with a snow storm according to the weatherman.

I have fished many times that the bilge pump ran all day.

Hmm.. don't you guys have mandatory safety equipment requirements down in the states? Up here a manual bailing device is required on all boats.

As for fishing in the rain..I live in the Pacific Northwest and if I didn't fish in the rain I would never fish! lol

Can't tell you how many of these I've made over the years:
Bailing Bucket.jpg
Even in rowboats with no drain hole, I've been able to fish all day in the rain with no problem.

I've often had an empty Labatt can in the boat. :D Or does it have to be "approved"?

If you have to ask, I'd say it's a bad idea for you to go out in a boat, rain or shine.

And yes, it's a bad idea because your beer gets watered down.

Different in every state. At least the one I'm in (and neighboring states) do not require any manual bailing device. For me at least, mandatory safety devices are:
* horn (or whistle) (>16 ft only)
* fire extinguisher (only under certain conditions that have to be met first)
* throwable cushion (>16 ft only) (and of course life jackets)

Anything beyond that is not mandatory.

I thought coffee in the early mornings and beer in the hot afternoon's were mandatory:D
