A 55# motor will draw 46 amps worst case which is very close to the 50A. Under normal conditions you would be ok with a 50A since you rarely get the motor to draw 46A. Getting weeds bound up in the motor is one of those conditions. So 50A is marginal and 60A would be preferred. 50A is NOT too high but rather marginally too LOW.
