Hello All!
I have a 1980-1981 (the serial matches both years) 9.8 Mercury outboard which has been having problems with the pull cord. I've had it replaced 3 times by "professionals" and each time it's broken within a few pulls. I've decided to go in and diagnose the problem myself.
I purchased the Seloc manual and it lists 8 different rewind types used on these motors (and for some reason does NOT give you year by year applications). The types are A-H. I've taken the starter/rewind assembly off and still can't figure out which one it is. I have some pictures that I took of the top of the rewind, bottom of the rewind, and of the mount the rewind goes on. If anyone could lead me in the right direction as to how to disassemble and reassemble the rewind on this I would be grateful (just the letter to follow in the manual would be great). Also any hints as to why the cord breaks every time (besides a burr) let me know. Thanks so much folks!
