The 1956 5.5hp Johnson had an original oil mix of 16 to 1. The engine employees bushings instead of needle and roller bearings. I'm wondering how lean can you run the oil mix with todays improved oils?

You can safely use the 24/1 fuel/oil mixture on that model due to the high quality improved oil that exists today.

1 quart of 50/1 oil to 6 gallons of gasoline. 87 octane fuel will be fine.

Thanks Joe.
Should be a little less smoke.

Oil is the cheapest thing you'll put in an outboard. Why skimp on it? I would stay with the factory recemendations. 24:1 is the recemended mixing ratio, for the needle bearing motors, 10hp and bigger.

My bushing small hp motors I run 16:1

Are todays oils better? For sure. That means they will smoke less, and foul the plugs less. I would stick to the correct mix though. They arent making any more powerheads you know.

i run 16:1 in my 16:1 motors and my 24:1 motors... cant notice any difference in the amount they smoke or performance, and as zepher stated (kinda).....the few drops of oil you'll save by going with the leaner mix isnt worth the potential outcome. jmo

If you object to the smoke, use 100% Synthetic TC-W3. Smokes less and is bio-degradeable.

I like your humor Crosby but I think I'll try the full synthetic. If the neighbors still think I'm barbecuing I'll try it at 24 to 1.

Wrench I see you are on the Trent. We used to keep a boat on Sturgeon Lake, but are now on Sparrow Lake, the last lake on the Trent before Georgian Bay....I love boating here.

Hi Chris: We're on the north end of Lake Scugug, down the river through Lindsay from Sturgeon. We used to hang around with a bunch from Burch Point Marina, but most of them have gone their separate ways now. We were out your way a few years ago and spent a night in Deep Bay. We only went as far as the lower side of Swift Rapids that trip, but hope to make it out to Georgian Bay some time.
