6hp water pump bleed holes. Why are they there?

This unit, which is from 1974, has a pin hole through the casing near the driveshaft and another in the lower plate. Both seem to be at the point of highest compression so would seem to defeat the object of the exercise. I also note that no driveshaft seal is specified for the top casing: how on earth does it work at all?

The drain holes are but a small portion of the total amount of water displaced. Don't worry, they have been working just fine for many years.
