So I got a dp lower unit advertised as 1.95:1. I know I should have had the guy double check! Lesson learned. Turns out its 2.3:1. But can I make this work with my 305? Using different props

Yes. Won't be as good as the right ratio, but it will work. Just need to get the WOT rpm in the right range.

Would that mean I have to put a higher B series prop on it to make the engine spin slower to account for the higher ratio? Is it worth while to replace the gears in it to make it a 1.95:1? It was was a repo and got it for a good deal

Yes.

The gear set alone is $1800, then you need bearings, seal kit, and 4 to 6 hours of reshimming, rolling torques, and gear pattern checks to get it right.
