I have removed the bolts and the lower unit only drops 1/2 inch. I am not sure where to undo the shift linkage. Is it behind the water intake screens or somewhere else? Thanks for any help! :joyous:

The shift linkage is up by the powerhead close to the front on the port side.
You need to remove the clamp bolt and it will drop.

Is the clamp bolt the large clamp above the lower unit with three nuts? I am attaching pictures. Thanks.

No. Up by the powerhead (the top of the engine) near the front, under the carbs. The shaft runs from there to the lower unit through the housing on the front of the outboard.

Why take the prop off? I just want to replace the water pump.

i have a 1985 Evinrude 50. On mine i had to take the starter off to get to the screw that held the shift shaft in place. The screw was located under the air clearners of the carbs. My shop manual also stated that mine needed to place in reverse prior to dropping lower unit. Again this was just for my motor but maybe it will help a little.

Yeah it's a real pain in the butt. You disconnect the shift rod under the carb area. Have someone hold the lower unit because after you disconnect the rod the lower unit will drop. Or put a nut back on it to hold it.

No need to take the prop off to change the water pump.

It just makes things easier. Might as well grease the prop shaft while you service the pump.

Thanks for the replies. I really appreciate everyones help. I have finally obtained a shop service manual. With the manual and the forum replies, I hope to complete the job this weekend. Again, thanks!! :)
