Evinrude 3706c will only run if the choke is on.

Last week i purchased a used 10ft flat bottom boat with no engine. Yesterday I got a 1967 evinrude 3706c for $50. It sorta runs if you leave the choke on but dies as soon as you push it back in. This is the first outboard ive ever had and i know nothing about them so any information would be helpful.

Make sure fuel is flowing to the carb. Remove fuel line at carb and turn the petcock 'on' w/tank vented. Should be a nice stream. If that's ok, sounds like you have a gummed up carb.
