I thought I had J200STLEI motor......

Greetings all, just a few short days ago I posted a thread about translating my serial number to a model number since I no longer have the label plate. Some one suggested that I call BRP and ask them to cross the number. They did and they came up with J200STLEI. So great, I'm thinking I have a 1991 200 GT.

As a electrical type technician in the Navy I was studying the wiring diagram in the 1973-1991 60-235 HP service manual (page A-27) which would've been applicable to what I have and I was noticing that the diagram wasn't matching the motor, specifically it was showing the I have a port and stbd power pack which my motor does not and it doesn't show the remote tilt and trim switch attached to the lower engine cover. Then I was looking through the wiring diagrams in the 1992-2001 65-300 HP manual staring with page 4-93 (1992) and again this diagram does not the remote trim switch. I turn to page 4-94/4-95 and this diagram for a 1993 engine looks about right. Here are the pictures I posted before in addition to the remote tilt/trim switch on the lower engine cover and picture of the power pack/ignition module. WTH do I have here? The serial number crossed to a model number indicates that I have a '91 200 but the wiring diagram indicates that I may have a '93 200. Any info, feedback, advice would be greatly appreciated.

What manual are you using to lookup the diagrams? Since it covers so many years I would assume it's a Seloc or Clymer.

The accurate diagrams are all available free at shop2.evinrude.com. Select your motor and look at the diagrams available there.

Yours looks like a 1991 to me.

Cheers

Re: I thought I had J200STLEI motor......

I'm using the manuals from boatinfo:

http://boatinfo.no/lib/evinrude/manuals/1973-1991johnsonevinrude.html#/0

http://boatinfo.no/lib/evinrude/manuals/1992-2001johnsonevinrude.html#/0

The wiring diagram that I mentioned on the 1973-1991 60-235 HP page A-27 is for V6 powerheads 150HP thru 235HP 1986 and on which should be the correct drawing for my motor if it was a 1991. If you look on that drawing it shows a port and starboard power pack and if you look at the pics that I posted you will not see any. Just the power pack/ignition module just behind the flywheel. That's why I don't think my engine is a '91 based on the dwg's mentioned and what my engine actually looks like.

Lastly you can only view 1997 and newer engine manuals on http://shop.evinrude.com/category/342499/Literature

Agree + 1........By the way Seloc and Clymer Suck. Never accurate. They'll get you in the ball park, but you might lose the game LOL.

I've heard nothing but bad things regarding the Clymer and Seloc. I stick with the manuals on boatinfo. I'm working on printing all 480 some odd pages of the manual now. Being stationed on ships I've always had to refer to equipment technical manuals and always preferred the paper copies vice electronic.

I'm sorry boobie, just so I'm clear. Are you agreeing +1 that my engine could possibly be a 1993 model and not a 1991 or do you agree with trendsetter that it's a 1991? Thanks.

The link is shop2.evinrude.com. It shows all the parts diagrams all the way back to 1968.

Your motor is a 1991.

Re: I thought I had J200STLEI motor......

Thanks, I understand that the parts diagrams go back to 1968 but I'm looking for wiring diagrams. When you click on the literature tab on shop2.evinrude.com the url becomes http://shop.evinrude.com/category/342499/Literature

I'm sorry, I failed to mention above that my engine has a vacuum switch. If my motor is a 1991 model then why does the 1986 and on 150HP-235HP wiring diagram look so much different that what I have and the 1993 185HP-225HP wiring diagram is more like it's correct?

Re: I thought I had J200STLEI motor......

Sorry I thought you were trying to identify the year and model of your motor not find a wiring diagram.

If you go to shop2.evinrude.com, select Johnson from the drop downlist upper left, expand 1991 in the treeview, expand 200 then select J200SLTLEID 1991 you will see the list of parts diagrams.

Select the ignition system and starter motor diagram. A diagram of your motor (as shown in the picture and with a single powerpack) is displayed.

The wiring diagrams that you see on the boatinfo site are not accurate. If you are doing any sort of serious service then you should order an actual factory service manual from marineengine.com. The factory service manual for your year and motor will contain all the correct wiring diagrams.

Re: I thought I had J200STLEI motor......

Oooooooh!!! OK. I thought the manuals on boatinfo were factory manuals!! I was just really confused. You are saying my motor is a '91 the wiring diagrams were telling me I may have a '93........ Uuuhhh. I've been a communications electrician coming up on 17 yrs and I do my own electrical troubleshooting and repairs and I want to make sure I have the correct diagrams. I have a little past experience with Mercury Outboards and this is my first Johnson so I'm not familiar, albeit a little similar to the Mercury.

Got it, I do have a 1991 200HP Johnson and I will be ordering the factory service manual from the site above. Thanks for your time and assistance!!

Re: I thought I had J200STLEI motor......

You're welcome. In my experience any of the publications that claim to cover 60-235hp over a period of 20 years are at best confusing and at worst inaccurate.
