91 V-135 Oil warning module beeping

Hi all

Greeting from the UK, i'm hoping somebody can help me with my engines fault.

I recently bought a Picton with a '91 V-135 fitted. The boat had been kept outside with a poor quality cover so has been exposed to a fair bit of dampness. I have combated all issues except this, when starting the engine, after a second or so I get beep beep beep. I have the service manual and this relates to the oil warning module. So far the only part I have replaced is the oil pump rotary sensor as i couldn't get a decent reading from it... which never cured the issue. The sensor came with a new magnet which is sealed inside of the plastic part. Only thing is, when replacing the parts, the drive gear popped out when turning the engine... so i removed it, checked condition and reinserted it. Does the gear have to be timed in with the engine TDC at all, or does its position make no difference? Im getting 12/13v on the purple wire, 12v in white wire to the rotary sensor, and some kind of voltage back from it. The Oil cap is giving NO continuity so i'm happy its not that. And Iv swapped the green wire on the switchbox side, to another cylinder on the switch box, which made no difference.

Im just trying to rule out everything before replacing the warning module (which are not so easy to come by in the UK). The only thing i haven't been able to accurately test is the switchbox feed, as I do not have a peak voltage meter and haven't found anybody with one, but i'm hoping that swapping the green wire to other switch box has proved that is not faulty - as engine is running fine with no signs of misfire? Stator also seems fine, i'm getting around 13v at battery when on idle and its rising a bit when revving. Also i forgot to mention, the oil pump is working OK. I'm very tempted to chuck some oil in for premix for safety sake, and take the engine out for a good run and see if it exposes or cures any problems, as i have only been running it on my drive with the muffs.

No sure about that particular engine but some have a problem with the sensor in the tank. The magnet falls off the bottom of the float and triggers low oil even with a full tank. Disconnect the wires from the tank and see if it clears.

Module failure usually results in constant beep. At least mine did on my 95 60hp.

Turn the drive gear 180 degrees,They are timed with the sensor.You also want to check the gear teeth for any debris as there is a nylon gear on the crank shaft that strips out

thanks for the replys,

i just doubled checked the oil cap - when removing it from tank and i get continuity, then when i screw it back in there is no continuity... so sounds OK to me.

I also just shifted the drive gear around 180... made no difference. I then turned it a further 90, then a further 180... so it has been tested in 4 position and made no difference... also i can see no indication in the service manual that the position makes any difference... so i think that rules that out which is a shame. Checked oil Pump again, definitely pumping OK

So i think i must be left with 2 options... an incorrect signal from switchbox, or a faulty alarm module. Although like i said when swapping the green wire between switchboxes it made no difference.

id appreciate any input on this... i took the boat out for a run on the weekend, and the engine runs great, easily managing 40 knots with 4 people on board... but still have that wretched beeping

iv managed to get hold of a replacement warning module bundled with a switchbox which i thought would be a handy spare. reading around, i think the timing of the oil pump in relation to to crank is important... as with the older magnet holders had a loose magnet, and if it was put in reverse it would cause a warning from what iv read... question is at what position does this need set at in relation to crank position as iv read all relevant sections of service manual and cannot find anything

Problem solved... I tried the oil pump drive gear in every position possible. Made no difference.

So swapped the module over for a replacement, and it has cured the issue. So happy it's sorted :joyous:
