Hello, Newbie here. First off, I've goggled many questions throughout the past month and was always brought here and found my answer. So figured this was the best place to start on my current problem that have have yet to find an answer to my specific application. I'm new to boats in general but have some knowledge on Chevy engines, but has been awhile since i have messed with them.
About a month ago I bought a 1988 Bayliner 1950 with the 5.0 Chevrolet Engine. It started and ran fine when we bought it. After we got it licensed and legal we took it out to take it for a drive. Once i got it in the water still on the trailer i fired it up and it had a hard time staying running. Just wouldn't idle. I decided i didn't feel comfortable taking it out. Took it back home and changed out the plugs. The old ones were fouled pretty good. It didn't really change the running much.
I then remembered that the guy i bought it from said it had been sitting for about 4 months and it had a full tank of gas in it. I decided to pump out the old and put some fresh gas in it. While i was at it, i changed out the fuel water separator and inline filter. Adjusted the idle a tad and it seemed to run fine. I was ready to take it back out and test it out. Right before i was taking it out, i noticed a fuel leak at the inline filter. This is the bad part. I got in too big of a hurry and stripped out the threads on the q-jet carb to where it was unfixable. (kicking myself in the arse!)
Soooo i ordered a 600cfm edlebrock 1409 marine carb. I mounted it up with the edelbrock adapter plate and it starts and idles alot better. Buuut it has a slight miss at idle. It had it before, but not as noticeable. It now misses through out the entire rpm band. I can rev it real quick and it doesn't miss, but if i hold it steady at any rpm it will spit and spudder.
I pulled the plug wires off of the distributor cap one at a time to look for a change in rpm at idle to show a potential miss and not once did the rpms change. I also used a long pair of needle nose pliers to pull a plug wire off of the spark plug and got a good jolt while it was idling.
I'm lost and would appreciate any advice or help, and sorry for the long post. Just want all the info in there that i could think of.
