63' 18hp Johnson here. I replaced the coils on this motor and in placing the flywheel on and torqing it and placing the (hand) start assembly on I pulled the rope and it seems by taking it all back off I find (rubbing) on (1) side of the flywheel ID. so I have something (off center)

What is the procedure for the positioning of the coils?

Thanks,

(Magneto & Driver Coil Alignment)
(J. Reeves)

To align the coils properly, have the metal vertical portion of the coil yokes aligned with the inside edge of the bevel that exists on the top portion of the aluminum seat upon which the coils sit. This creates the proper distance between the coils and the flywheel magnets. Faulty alignment creats friction and the yokes of the coils heat up, turn blue and expand.

I dont know how many coils you do a year, but a coil alignment tool comes in handy. F_R makes them.

Not overly difficult though as Joe stated. If you can run your nail up the mounting boss and have it catch on the coil lamination, it is out too far. You dont want it in too far either though, or you will lose spark.
