A 1997 Johnson 175 OR that I was running out in the channel and as I approached the No Wake Zone, I throttled down. However, I couldnt throttle down below about 3500 rpms. I slipped it into neutral. But the throttle plates were still open and the engine pegged out to about about 7000+ rpms for a second or two until I killed the ignition. Turns out that an airbox hose was rubbing against the throttle linkage and caused them to stick open.
Ran the boat about 20 mihnutes thereafter with no probems. The motor sounded a little different after the fact. Is it likely that this would have damaged the engine psitons, rings. I know the question is open ended, but is there anything I need to double check prior to running this boat 20+ miles offshore?
