Hi,
Can anyone tell me where the thermostat on my 1978 evinrude 140hp is located? (883C)
Pictures would be great.
Exact steps would be awesome.
I'm not familiar with other parts of the motor (heads, exhaust, etc.)

The left side of engine block is way too hot. My warning sound stays on.
I've got the manuals but it looks like its a different language. :)

My neighbor thinks its the thermostat so i've got 2 brand new thermostats and no where to put em. LOL
Just wanna get the kids out this summer.

Thanks for any help.

You can go to shop.evinrude.com and look up parts diagrams of your mtr and get some idea. Or else buy an OEM factory service manual.

Very difficult job to do.
The thermos are directly in the center of the rear of the engine, down under the bottom of the block. They are covered up by the lower cowling, and almost impossible to access.
Some mechs drill holes in the lower cowling just to get a socket in there.
Best to get it to a skilled mechanic if it is really true that you are unsure of heads, exhause, etc. as you state.

As daselbee indicated, the thermostat housing sits at the back of the exhaust adapter, under the bulge in the powerhead outer exhaust cover. On this engine, it's a bear to get at. On that older model, you should be able to loosen the lower cowling to gain additional access to the thermostat housing cover. Expect some skinned knuckles.
