hi i was wondering if anyone could help me out.
Recently i checked my water pump on my 1975 evinrude 85hp but forgot to mark the tab underneath. when i reinstalled it i aligned the tab to 0 or straight as i could get. now it seems that the boat wants to veer of to the right when at full throttle. just wondering which way to turn the tab and by how much to compensate. Also would this also affect the balance of the boat it also seems to be leaning to port when at speed?

Don't try to figure it out. Take a wrench along next time you go out and try it all the way one way or the other. One way will make it worse, and the other better. Maybe. Often it is not sufficient to make a difference. Depends on your boat/motor. Prop torque will make the boat lean to one side. The trim tab may contribute to that too.

The trim tab must be moved in the direction of the pulling action. Move it 1/8" at a time until it stabilizes.

Like Joe says. A little at a time. It is trial and error with an occasional educated guess.

Also, keep this in mind. Many mechanics, myself included, before removing a lower unit for any reason, we would scribe a mark across the trim tab into the lower unit so that when reinstalling the lower unit, the trim tab gets installed in the identical spot from whence it came.

yes i found that out the hard way. I am guessing you would need to adjust when changing to a different size prop. I have a nice stainless steel one that i might install
