hi all, i have an old red band 9.8, and am wondering how many cc's it is, and is it still the same powerhead used in the 80's and early 90's?
regards

179cc the powerheads on the later 9.8 are the same cc but not interchangeable as the upper main bearing cap where the stator mounts is different.

i read somewhere with doubt, that the 9.8hp 110 meant it was only 110cc, so thanks for debunking that theory.

Re: red band 9.8hp 110

The 110 loosely followed Mercury's model numbering system as it was essentially a 10hp (rated 9.8 to get under 10hp limit lake rules). I was never sure why they went with 110, though, rather than 100. They'd had a model 100 before, and most other models followed the numbering (50hp was 500, 85hp was 850, etc.) but they got goofy on the 9.8. I suppose 110 is better than calling it the 98.... ;)

i also remember they called the 40hp a 402, was that for the same reason?
