It currently has a 2x6 (which is too thick to fit under the rail, about 1 1/4" under rail space) and I want to redo with some sort of plywood (so i can make a solid T shaped piece for more structural soundness)? I have any experiences you have had would be great.If I go with Ocume(sp?) marine grade do I have to seal it with anything...it is about $84 a sheet for 3/4" - 18mm.

Hello, I replaced the wood on my 14' aluminum about 7 years ago. I pulled the old wood out in large pieces to make patterns. It worked great. As far as wood I used 3/4" marine grade fir and was able to buy a half sheet for $35. I even had enough left over to make a couple of canoe seats. As far as sealing I used Thompsons water seal, I realize its not the best thing to use but the price was right, free. I haven't had any problems with strength or rot and I run a 25hp longshaft.

You can use regular plywood. Just sandwich together with waterproof wood glue and secure with stainless screws.Seal the whole thing with epoxy.Done this MANY times.

I agree with DJ. You can add more strength by glueing two pieces together to get the thickness you want. Cut so grain of second piece runs perpindicular to the first. Use stainless screws, then seal it up. It'll last for years.

That sounds like a more economical solution as long as it holds. I went to look at plywood today and found mostly ac birch, Lowes has some fir ac grade that is exterior rated for $40, they also have some sheathing grade ac for $26 - will that do? The next step up is $80 a sheet for marine grade ab. I dont mind the extra cash if the solution is 2 times as good (the price diff) but if it is just going to be just incrementally better I would rather just get the good epoxy sealer and be done with it.Thanks for the input guys, I appreciate it!
