I have used my 1975 Evinrude 9.9 last season and it runs like a top. As winter is here and I am lubing and cleaning up the motor (still a rookie) I noticed that the shift lock lever is not in the proper notch for forward, neutral and reverse. As shown in attached photo?the motor is in neutral but the shift lever is in the wrong notch. Can anyone educate me on how to fix this or should I just leave well enough alone? I really would like to make it ?right?.shift-lock.jpg

That first notch is neutral. Forward is above that.. on the top of that detent deal.. not in a notch when in forward, just held w/spring tension to not fall into neutral. I thought that was strange too, but that's how they are.

Good luck!

If it's running good and shifting properly, " leave a sleeping dog lie "
