Hey all, i have a 1988 or 89 mariner 220hp efi outboard and im having a few issues with it.

I am very new to boating and was wondering if someone could help me figure this out. I will post each issue seperately though.

When we was out at the weekend and went over a wakes of a large ship we then had a intermittant fast beep coming from the ignition as there is a alarm bell located underneath, this has happened before and i thought it was a loose corroded wire so had it replaced and it didnt happen again untill the weekend, now i dont think it is not the oil as far as i know, i have plenty in both the top of the outboard tank and the tank that supplies the outboard, there was no water in the fuel either.

When i arrived at my destintion i opened up the casing and noticed it was wet inside there and also water in the back of the boat where the battery, oil tank etc is and this happened the last time we went over a big wake it also got a little wet and this started, why is it doing this and is there a way to prevent this happening, we left it whilst we were off the boat and once we was heading home it was all dry and we had no beeping so this is why im thinking something is getting wet to trigger this alarm. What should i look for?

Also just to note when we bought the boat the previous owner had modified the casing and cut small holes out of each side of the casing and put air vents there, we have blocked these up as we thought the water would be coming in from there the first time it happened and there is really no need for these to be there.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

a steady beep = overheat, an intermittent beep usually signifies an oil problem. The trigger alarm is usually under the dash or on the throttle control. I had a similiar oil intermittent problem on a 135 mariner and found out the plastic gear that turns the oil pump was chipped. Too expensive to replace. I just run the engine on 50-1 ratio of gas to oil. No problems
