225 Yamaho gear shift grinding after lower unit reinstall

Engine is 2003 225 Yamaha OX66 EFI 2 stroke 3.1L. VMAX. After water pump kit installation and reinstall of lower unit, more than normal gear grind occurred going into forward and reverse. During water pump test, propellar turned in neutral and excessive grinding going into forward and reverse. With engine off, in neutral prop turns freely both directions and was locked in forward and reverse. Wondering if the gear change splines are off a bit.

I would think if that was off then it would be a problem with neutral and one gear but not both.

Maybe motor was still idling too high when you shifted gears or you moved shifter too slowly

Motor was probably doing this before you changed the water pump. You are just paying more attention now. It all sounds normal to me.
