1960's evinrude fastwin power problem, possibly fuel...

Hi everyone
I'm new here and new to boating this year aswel!
I purchased a 66' Glastron with a similar year outboard earlier in the year.
The code on the engine bolt is
15032 01992
And low and behold it has a problem..
I will now try my best to explain te problem.
The boat will fire right up first pull and take off at a decent clip full throttle... For about 20 seconds... Then looses power and will not regain power. It will cruise along but at a slow pace, i can give the fuel hand pump a squeeze and it will sort of try to get going again but nothing like what it is on startup.

This is an old engine, and I live it, it's original and matches the ol boats classic retro looks and if I can i wanna get it running real good again.

The guy I purchased it off said he did carbs on it and I'm new to this and really have no idea what I'm doing

If anyone could shine a light and give some helpful advice it would be much appreciated !

It is a 1960

Sounds like you are only running on one cylinder. Have the coils been changed>>?

I changed plugs but not the coil. Can a cylinder that's not firing on one be fixed easy ?
It's basic pull start , there's no electrics in then boat.
Also I notice that it leaks some fuel out the back when I start it and it idles... I'm not sure how much that is to e expected with the engines age.

Yep, it sounds like your ignition system needs a once over. If the coils are cracked, they'll need replacing. Bad coils are common in these motors, if they're the factory coils. Once you replace them, they'll last forever.

As mentioned above the coils should be looked at. There is a cover plate on top of the flywheel that when removed allows access to the coils for inspection but the coils can't be replace from here. The flywheel has to come off for replacement of the coils. These old motors are tough and easy to work on. In most cases just your common tools can get the job done. Getting the flywheel off is the usually the hardest part. Have a look at what I did to get my 1959 Evinrude 18 up and running like a champ.

+1. Sounds like you're dropping a cylinder, which is a cheap, easy, DIY fix. All original OMC coils had a 100% failure rate over time. Here are some great links that can walk you through a tune up of your motor from top to bottom. You can get most consumable parts right here at iboats too. Also, be sure to use GRADE 8 bolts and washers when pulling the flywheel as the stock bolts that come with the puller are usually too weak. Good luck. Holler if you get stuck.

Hey thanks everyone for the quick and helpful replies !
Here some other info that I forgot to add that may help with the diagnosis.

It drinks fuel like crazy! I mean it really drinks it. Way more than a little motor like that should .
And
It has a lot of trouble idleing. This one seems to fit the bill for having a bad cylinder. It won't idle unless I throttle up.

Also I was going to ask about fuel type ... Now I know a guy is supposed to use ethanol free gas on these ... Right ?
I may have run a can of regular through it before I knew and I'm sure this has happened in the past... How bad is this for the engine?
The guy at te marina told me i prob wrecked the engine , but I'm not sure if I hold his opinion in high regard ...

If they're running on one cylinder, they will use a lot more fuel. Simply because that one cylinder is working harder to do, what two are supposed to be doing. And yes, they won't idle, if one cylinder is dead.

If you have mixed fuel at 24:1, you're good. It doesn't really matter what kind of gasoline it is. One won't give you any better performance, over the other. If you don't mix the gas, you'll seize up the motor, before the first gallon is used.

The ethanol will eat up fuel lines and clog carbs if the fuel lines are not ethanol proof. SO if you use it be sure to change your lines, rebuild carb, rebuild fuel pump, etc...
