I am new to boating and have a sea ray with a 1970 v4 85HP Johnson. Because the engine is older it is not equipped with a receptor for the plug hooked to my instrument panel. Can i buy an adapter or do I need to individually install the appropriate sensors and what not?

Welcome to iboats!:welcome:

What gauges did youu have in mind? Most useful would be a tachometer and voltmeter.

What you need depends on what instruments you have. Most outboard powered boats have fuel, voltmeter, tachometer and speedometers. Temperature and water pressure and trim gauges are other options. Fuel, trim, and temperature gauges require senders that match the gauges. Tachometers operate from the engine charging system so no sender is needed. A pitot is needed to operate the speedometer. Volt meters need only a connection to plus 12 volts and ground.
