Engine alignment problem

A couple years ago I replace the gimbal bearing and aligned the engine in my boat with no issues so when my friend asked for help I told him no problem. His boat has a prealpha outdrive with a 165 mercruiser inline 6. We replaced the gimbal bering with no issues although I cannot get the engine aligned. My alignment tool will slide into the splines about 1/4" and stop. I have adusted the engine up and down to where the splines were tight on the top to where they were tight on the bottom. I have verified the size of the alignment tool and it is correct. I have read everything I can think of on line and on this site and have tried everything I can think of. Does anyone have any ideas?

You should not have needed to change the alignment for just a gimbal bearing change. What it sounds like you might have is the gimbal bearing not fully seated.

And a new gimball bearing is a tad stiff and may need to be aligned to the axis. I have seen putting the alignment tool into a new bearing that is tight and then thumping the end of the bar a bit with a rubber hammer at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock, will align the bearing to the axis and make bar insertion much easier.
