I have a 14'6" figlass boat with a 73 Evinrude 50hp. Currently has a 13 1/4 x 17 prop which gets me around 5700rpm at WOT. This prop is a little rough on the tips. As a spare I have a 13 3/4 x 15 which I have only tried for 15 minutes some time ago but as I remember it obtained much the same rpm. Would this be a simliar prop performace wise given its a smaller pitch but bigger blades ? I was hoping to use it as my main prop and use the 17" as my spare. Both are aluminium

Re: Evinrude 50 Prop

Do you have the gps speed for the 17 at 5700 rpm?
Assuming your 17 is working close to normal the 15 would produce more rpm
and faster hole shot but probably less top end.
My info indicates the max wot rpm for the motor is 5500 so your already over revving a litle.
If you have a good prop shop nearby you could have your 17 repaired.

Re: Evinrude 50 Prop

Thanks Steelespike, my service manual says 50hp @ 5500rpm & full throttle operating range 5000 - 6000 rpm So I thought I was pretty much ok ? I'll take it out again next weekend with my GPS and see what the results are. I was hoping to get a 2nd hand 17" SST off ebay last night but I was at work and my mobile/internet were not co-operating so I missed out on it. Will get back to you after the weekend. Cheers

You are correct in that the WOT rpm range is 5000-6000 rpm. :)
