1974- era 50hp omc longshaft

Just what may be a dumb question. Is there a longshaft version of the omc 50HP in the 74 -78 era? I believe i seen a sailing version but not sure if thats the same as a normal longshaft or not. I also know they did have them in 40hp. Cant see much in the model numbers in the parts lists other than one with an s which i would assume would be for the sailboat version.

Sure there were long shaft versions (20"). One example would be a 1979 Evinrude, long shaft model # 55974, short #55973. I have no idea what you mean by a sailboat version. They had sailboat versions of small motors like 9.9hp. If you are looking at an "S" at the end of a model number that is indicitave of any mid-year changes---if there were any changes. It does not mean "short".

When i posted this, i thought they made 50's in 76 -78 but i do not see any in the parts lists just for 1974 and 1975. When i look for a longshaft in the parts lists i look for ones with housing extensions right above the gearcase and i cannot see any in those years so thought perhaps one is factory and is not an extension but comes in one piece rather than with the extra piece. I just looked now and see a longer single piece one ( was looking for an extension before) part # 0320316 is the correct part number i think but it does not really say the length of it or the shorter or as they call it standard length. My eyes must be tired LOL - thanks for your reply and im gonna keep on looking because apparently they made them.
My ref to the model number with the SL one was because i thought they were numbered like the sailmaster ones - my 86 six hp is j6slcde and i thought the s stood for sailmaster like it says on the engine shroud.

should clarify what i said there - looking for one for 74 or 75 - i had said 74-78 when i posted it because i thought they made them right thru

OK, yes '76-up were 55hp. Regardless, they all were made in either short (15") or long (20") options. You bought whichever one you needed and they could not be changed without changing a multitude of parts. A short or long motor was made that way at the factory, ie the parts were made either long or short, and the 5" extension parts were a thing of the past.

I worked at an Evinrude dealership during those years, and we had the 50 in "Lark" Styling and "Sizzler" sport styling. The 1974 Lark models were 50442 (short), and 50443 (long), and the Sizzler models were 50472 (short) and 50473 (long) Johnson had only one 50hp style in 1974, 50ES74 (short) and 50ESL74 (long). The "S" does not mean short. Frankly, I don't remember exactly what it meant. Actually it meant different things in various years, and some times it meant next to nothing, as in the case here where they ALL were "S". Never did it mean short shaft.

Tried to reply but lost my thread so here goes againThanks for your prompt reply and help with my original post , Supreme Mariner. I was asking for another guy who has already changed the powerhead on his motor and repaired the boat only to find it was too short for the boat so i reckon he will have to get an adaptor of some sort for that motor which may not be very easy to do considering the weight of them so perhaps he may have to do something to the transom of the boat if he wants to use that motor.
