Hi
I need some help. I have a Smoker Craft 1989 Fazer 172 and I need to know what shaft length for a trolling motor I will need. My problem is the boat is in storage in another state.

Thanks

They are adjustable. It also depends on how far from where you mount it to where the water line is.

Re: trolling motor shaft length

You need a 50 - 52 inch shaft. The rule of thumb is to measure the distance from the bow of the boat where the motor will sit to the water line. Then add one foot. Another way to look at this is that boats in the 15 - 17 or even 18 foot range have the top of the bow about two feet above the water. Add a foot for the head above the bow and a foot into the water and you have 50 inches give or take a bit. You can raise the motor if necessary if the shaft is a bit too long but you cannot stretch one that is too short. A 42 inch shaft will not work for you.
