Hi all, just bought a boat with a j175txcua , 1987 johnson 175 v6 crossflow. The previous owner removed the vro completely and wired a cheap automotive fuel pump that is not working properly.. I want to install omc dual pump setup used in the 76-83. Does anyone know what part #s I need for the upper and lower fuel pumps. Is there any difference in the upper and lower fuel pump? I was told the older fuel pumps would work on this motor. Thanks on advance for your replies...

The '83 used a #389440 lower pump and a #388555 upper pump (both now obsolete).....the part numbers of each pump varied some between '76 and '83 though and im not sure exactly why.....what they did have in common was a third hose fitting to supply pulse to the unit.....the two part numbers listed seems to me to be the most widely used pairing and have almost certainly been superseded by replacement units.

Mark is correct. The upper pump has been superceded to 438559, the lower pump supercedes to 393870. Both should be stock items with Bombardier. Your current VRO pump uses a single pulse line. If you go to the dual old-style pumps, you will have to use two pulse lines-each plumbed direct to the block.

Ok, thanks for the info. I will order the pumps. When I bolt up the pumps do I have to remove the plug in the block between the 2 bolt holes to supply the pulse? Is the pulse nipple on the pump not used? thanks

Whoa! Nope, that wont work with these pumps. As already stated, these pumps a have third hose fitting to supply pulse to the pump......there is no opening (hole) in the back to supply pulse when directly mounted to the block. IF you have the provision on your block to directly mount two pumps and supply pulse to both you are going to have to order the correct two line pumps (im not aware if they actually exist for this application) with the opening in the back for pulse OR stick with these pumps and supply them with pulse by plumbing (hose) to the block.

The older style (before VRO) pumps were 3-legged pumps. These dual V6 pumps each have a pulse line (hose) which connects to a hose barb on the side of the block. Likely your current pump is plumbed to one of them. Likely your block has a plug in the second hole-you'll have to remove it and put in a similar hose barb for the second pulse like for the second pump.
