Just acquired an old Johnson 140 which supposedly spent most of it's life in fresh water, no previous outboard experience and I would like to get this ready for a pre xmas outing. Garden hose will be connected to flushing muffs before firing it up and fuel/oil mixed 50 to 1.

Any advice much appreciated.

Before starting it check your G/C oil and make sure you have fresh fuel.

Since you are the new owner, you may want to baseline the engine for future reference. Take compression readings on all 4 cyls. I'd be reluctant to take the engine out, not knowing the condition of the water pump impeller. Once you know the gearcase is full of new/good oil, the compression checks out ok, and the engine runs fine, the replace the impeller. No need to put the impeller in if the engine won't run right....and no need to get stranded out on the water if the old pump finally stops working.

Re: Johnson 140

Got some fresh fuel and added some 2 stroke oil, poured it into the tank, connected it up to fuel line, gave the bulb primer a few squeezes and turned it over. Nothing, not even a cough so I gave the primer a few more squeezes cranked again and still nothing so I took a plug out for a look, bone dry and not even a sniff of fuel. A few more squeezes and cranked again, this time it gave a cough and a cloud of smoke. By this time the battery was on it's last legs so it is charging for another attempt later in the week.

When the flushing muffs were connected water was seen to be flowing from the small holes in the lower part of the gear casing but nothing from the top, is there supposed to be flow from the top when the motor is not running ?

Not much water is going to get past the impeller when the engine is not running and the thermostats are closed. Once, it starts cranking and starts, you should get water out of the telltale in the lower cowling and eventually water out of the exhaust relief ports at the top of the midsection.

When trying to start, are you choking it properly ??

Re: Johnson 140

Didn't use choke at first but gave it about half on later attempts.

Maybe I should have mentioned earlier that before I took it home it started very easily then died, then at another attempt at starting it gave a screech just like a slipping starter ring when cranking it over, then I realised the fuel line was disconnected.

It's way too cold this week for further attempts as the temperature outside is hovering around 0c.

make sure the gear on the starter isn't sticking, mine was sticking and would "screech" put a little grease on the shaft, worked it till it slide easy, no more screech:joyous:

No further progress due to the ice cold weather but I did see that the starter was engaging as it should without screeching.

This site is an absolute font of knowledge on all aspects of Johnson outboards.

Here's a photo of what the old motor attached to, just dragged it home last week.

Re: Johnson 140

Today the freshly charged battery was connected, squeezed the primer a few times, connected up the hose and opened up the fast idle, turned the key and holding in for a few seconds then activated the starter and she fired up almost instantly, a little bit rough and smokey at first then it settled down to a fairly even idle and the tell tale flowed nicely. :joyous: Next stop off to the loch (after I check the gear oil) but that's for another day.
