Hi, I am new to the forum! I have a 77 35 electric start, and I want to check to see if it has the capability to charge my battery. I tested the rectifier and found it was not working, so I changed it out for new. How do I test to see if the engine is charging the battery? A friend said that the magneto charges the battery, and no generator or alternator is necessary. Any experience with this out there?

Thanks!

Re: 1977 Evinrude 35 Elecrtic Start Battery Charging

Using a multimeter with the engine off read the voltage across the terminals of the battery. Start the engine(with muffs; in a tank, or in the water) of course; then read the voltage across the batttery terminals again. Voltage reading should be somewhat higher than before but not a huge amount since you are dealing with a small charging unit. Anything higher indicates that charging is occurring. Good luck
