New crabbing boat for the Pacific NW...But what is it?

Well hello everyone! This is my first post although I've been viewing Iboats for quite a while. Well everyone... I took the plunge and decided to pick up a boat today... My main goal was i wanted something that was already running and for the most part structurally sound as well and in my search I really grew a big preference toward the older tri-hull open bow design. That said I found (and purchased) what you see below a 19 foot tri-hull open bow for $620 with a fresh rebuilt Merc 700 O/B...the only problem is ... i dont know if the title for the boat is correct and there is no kind of markings or plates anywhere to distinguish what type of boat this is. The title only states it is a 1972 19foot fiberglass Lyn-Craft... but in all the research i have done on Lyn-craft they stopped manufacturing boats in 1970 so that didn't add up although it 1970 i did see that they had a model that looked fairly similar. With all this said i figured i would ask the question and see if anyone may be able to help me narrow this down so as i may be able to see what it might have looked like in it's stock format to help me begin my project.

Thank you in advance for all the help :)

Here are a few Lyn-Craft threads @iboats:

Lyn-Craft boat

Trying to ID. Any ideas?

It has definitely had a paint job since new. It may have an HIN embossed into the hull on one side or the other of the motor. It may help. Don't be surprised if the title &/or reg have it dated incorrectly. Pre-internet it was much harder to ID boats, and many didn't have titles, so the motor was used for date reference. My 1960 FireFlite was listed as a 1957, because it was easy to determine the year of the Johnson motor, any NAPA store could help ID it. But the boat is quite clearly NOT a '57 & definitely is a '60. So start w/ some measurements of the boat: beam, transom width & height, overall boat length & a serial # for the motor & dig in & start looking around. Might get lucky & stumble on the answer. Maybe not......

Pay particular attention to overall length. My 1963 15' SC Jet is 14' 9". The 1963 16' SC Jupiter is 16' 3". The 18' SC Holiday is 18' 6", but I haven't yet firmly ID it's year. It is likely to be a 1974, we are missing the SC brochure from 1974 to confirm it. And the same models in different years were slightly different lengths. Helped me narrow down the years, when there were no titles & reg paperwork at all.

Re: New crabbing boat for the Pacific NW...But what is it?

Thank you very much for your quick reply... after looking at those links you posted i guess i feel more confident that the title may be right it does look like the other 72 tri hull that was posted... ill dig into it tomorrow and see if there are any markings on the inside... I really wanted to see what it looked like stock so i knew the pieces that were/were not missing and therefore would give me a starting point to build upon. she definatly has a different paint job on her...there are areas where you can see the factory white coming through...my first plan is to lift and look under the decking to see how bad it possibly is ...it looks like someone put a piece of 4x8 ply and glassed over it on the deck and didn't do a very good job as just the glass from that decking is coming apart from the hull all around the 4x8 perfectly so that is step one to see if it was someones hack job or if it was factory and therefore how much worse it is...next would be sanding and refinishing the outside to a more traditional paint job. I'm quite anxious to get this thing going!

it looks like someone put a piece of 4x8 ply and glassed over it on the deck and didn't do a very good job as just the glass from that decking is coming apart from the hull all around the 4x8 perfectly so that is step one to see if it was someones hack job!

... and that would be the lid to Pandora's Box!

Please take and post before and after pics of the demolition and the previous owners attempts at repairs. We love to see boats in need of repair being torn down and are entertained by some of the repairs made by the clueless.

For what you paid for this boat and the recently rebuilt motor I think you got a pretty good deal. Of course your boat will need repairs, time and money... but they all do when they're that age.

Thanks JignGrub for the vote of confidence on the score... I'm glad to know i didn't get screwed on the purchase ...I figured i was in the right price point but its good to hear someone else say it as well.

Well as for todays events i went ahead and gave her a nice pressure wash and removed the overlay of fiberglass on the deck and let me tell you... that stuff came up WAY to easy it looks like it was definitely replaced at one point with a really bad glass job. I didn't see your post this morning otherwise i would have gotten the before pictures but i did snag pictures after i was complete with ripping it out which are below you can also see the shotty paint job that was done from the picture of the bow. Next step is actually removing the decking and working with photoshop to determine the future paint job. I also sent out the seats this morning to my uncle who does custom upholstery to have those redone as well.
