1982 johnson 15hp problems

Hi every one i hope you might be able to help with my motor. When first purchased took it for a run and it ran great it was like this for the next couple of runs. then on one run it started off like normal but then lost all power back to idle speed. It got me back to shore but like i said at idle speed. Once turned off would not start again so once at home tried to start again started after 10 to 20 pulls once running seemed to idle good and when put in forward gear reved at full throtle and back to idle.I took it to the creek it started fine put in gear would only idle along no power at all. Took back home cleaned carbi replaced fuel line as looked a bit dodgey checked spark all good . Took for another run but same as before lacks power under load revs and runs well out of the water but in the water nothing. If anyone has an idear as to what my problem is I would very much appreciate the help.

Sounds like one cylinder isn't firing under compression ; if you didn't check spark with in-line spark tester and get a spark at 7/16ths inch then just holding the plug next to the block won't tell you anything. Probably have a power pack going bad. Others will chime in with other thoughts and advice. Good luck.

Clean and secure all ground connections! -Ground from CDI to block, kill switch to chassis, both coil grounds. Inspect all wires for worn insulation. Pull apart CDI plug(s) and inspect/clean w/electronic spray. Good practice for any motor and can save headaches later.

Have you checked compression on both cylinders? That test is simple, cheap, revealing, and needs to be proven before all else. If compression is not up to snuff, you can forget about all else.

Does it rev. up in the creek but not power the boat or will it not rev. in the creek? Sorry but I'm confused. Best of luck. Rick.
