Just bought this 1979 25hp Evinrude long Shaft electric start (25905R) because as I get older (68) I find it harder and harder to pull start my sweet dependable 1959 Evinrude 18. Need to convert this 25 to short shaft. This motor came with the 5" extension so what I have read is all I need is the short drive shaft and shift shaft and modify the water tube. This engine has a copper/brass tube that covers the drive shaft and is o-ring sealed apparently to keep exhaust and water from hitting the drive shaft. What do I do with this tube when I convert to short shaft? I'll keep my out for a G/C from a short shaft motor on eBay and CL in the mean time.

I would love to find someone needing to convert to long shaft for a trade.

It is really discouraging to see how some folks neglect these ole' dependable outboards. Pulled the prop this morning as I get into the tear down and found a hand full of fishing line rapped around the prop shaft. That has got to be one of the simplest maintenance item in keeping any outboard up to snuff!

Thanks,
Bill
