Re: rebuild

First post. Greetings to all. The 24' 1964 Lone Star above is new to me. I traded labor building a small horse pen for it. The wood and upholstery were rotted. I don't know where to start. I have a home wood shop and lots of experience in cabinets, construction, AC cabinetry and interiors, a little mechanical and paint. At first I thought I'd do a lot of fancy stuff but after stripping out everything I decided to keep things simple. Here's a random list of things I am researching.

1. Redeck with treated lumber. I have a bunch of 5/4" boards that are well dried.
2. Floatation foam in forward hull areas and under deck.
3. Rewiring and new lights, horns, radios, motor controls.
4. New windshields that open with auto glass. I know a guy that cuts it and another guy that welds aluminum.
5. Strip paint and somehow get boat off trailer to repaint.
6. Check out head and figure out how to use it.
7. Make motor stand and beginchecking it out.

That's more than enough for now. I have more pictures. Thanks, Dave

Re: rebuild

I would first dunk it in the water and see where the leaks are. Use no foam since it will trap moisture and that causes wood rot. As for pressure treated, don't waste the money. Just coat some fir with resin.

Nice Boat!!! I have a 15' 1961 Lone Star Flamingo that I just restored. Your's will be a bit more challenging. The link in my signature line below will give you some drawings and details on how to do everything that you will need to do. If you haven't already, make sure to drill some exploratory holes in the stringers and transom to determine if the wood is wet and rotting. Using the Treated boards will be ok since they are good and dry. I would recommend planing them down to 5/8". You don't need all the extra weight. You can foam the hull if you want or you could use the Pink Or Blue foam insulation Slabs from Lowe's/Home Depot. It wont hold water and makes any water under the deck a lot easier to drain to the bilge. the boat may or may not be painted. It may be gelcoat. If so, then sanding and filling any gouges with a coat of primer and new paint will do the trick. There's a link in my signature about that too!
We're here for you so keep posting pics and questions and we'll help when and where we can.

reset rivets?

reset rivets?

Thanks for the replies. There is silicone on the forward keel strip and fiberglass tape on the inside floor centerline. The silicone isn't factory, not sure about the tape. Testing on a body of water is out now because of tags, licenses, etc. A friend says to reset the rivets. Sounds good to me.

I'm just trying to get an idea of the materials and procedures needed and trying to avoid mistakes. Proper planning etc.etc.

First I'd like a deck and floor even if loose ply just to walk around in it and work on. Oh yeah, the wife thinks I'm nuts but I think she really kinda likes it. Yeah that's it, she likes it.

Mine officially welcomes her to the iboat's widow support group....

Meetings can be found regularly at a nearby <insert store/coffee house/tea room/restaurant/bar of her choosing>

I don't see a strip of fiberglass tape along the centerline of the boat

Re: reset rivets?

The glass tape is under the dirt in the center. About 3" wide. What if I clean the inside and fill it with water and look for leaks on the outside? And when I find them...?

Looks to be a tinny, which makes the fiberglass strip down the inside of the keel interesting...

You can see a row of rivets along the port gunwale, and it definitely has metal gunwale support 'ribs', and tin seat supports in front of the splashwell.

To adequately leak test either floating it in water or filling it w/ water, you'll likely need to pull the insulation along the gunwales. Else the leakers may not be visible, show themselves at all, or be repairable...

Look thru the SC resto threads, lots of good tin info in there, and lots of examples of the hull clean out, and leak testing.........

Starcraft Rebuilds and Restorations, they're all here!

Re-buck the loose rivets

or

Drill out & replace leakers w/ rivets or nuts & bolts

It's aluminum. The black pup can't get in yet. She tries to climb the ladder.

Re: rebuild

I see lots of good stuff here. Going to make a motor stand as I have plenty of lumber. Also temporary deck and cabin floor. Will post more and pics as this moves along. Getting cold here now so it wll be slow over the winter.

Re: rebuild

1. Remove white beaded styrofoam from sidewalls (probably some real nice mouse poop behind it).

2. Check transom for rot, remove if rotted.

3. Pressure wash inside of boat and then check for leaks.

4. Fix any leaks.

5. Don't use pressure treated wood on aluminum boats, it is corrosive.

6. I'll give you $5 for the boat and $10 for the dog right now. :)
