1975,70hp json, idles well, no go

engine starts well ,idles and revs up smoothly in neutral but dies as soon as it is put into gear.just bought it w/o trying it out,only heard it run at the dock. previous owner said it ran well w/o problems , i am still on his fuel mix. what am i doing wrong? help please

Do your basic checks first; Check spark, check compression. Do a cylinder drop test to make sure all three are firing. You are probably only running on two, but there are a variety of reasons that you have a cylinder not running.

Oh, and unless that fuel is fresh, stop using it.

While you are at it, you probably want to take a look at the Top Secret files and do some more basic checking like the impeller and the gearcase oil. Get a good sense of where that motor is mechanically before you start tearing into it.

if the motor is new to you its always good to do a basic tune up, new plugs, check the spark, get some carb cleaner and clean the carbs real good, decarb the engine, and always mix a fresh batch of fuel that you have mixed.
