Im having trouble getting a 9.8 kicker running. Ive rebuilt the fuel pump and can get it to start but not keep running. It sputters when I open the choke and dies after a few seconds when opening the choke
any help is appreciated.

Re: trouble with 9.8 MODEL 110

I have a '78 Merc 110. My advice, rebuild the carburetor. Just take it apart and clean it out, there is probably all kinds of gunk in there that has built up over the years. I would be careful when disassembling the carb and try to same the gaskets so that you can reuse them if they're not in too bad of condition. Put the carb back together and see if that fixes the problem.

I had the same problem with my 110, a small piece of trash had clogged up the jet and it would only run with the choke pulled.

Good luck

Re: trouble with 9.8 MODEL 110

Th use of ethenoal gas in older motors will deterate any rubber hoses or carb and fuel pump parts when left in the motor and not run for a period of time. Newer ethenol resitant kits are not effected as bad. A can of Power Tune used on the motor might work to clean the carb without tearing it off the motor and sells for less than 15 bucks at most Merc dealers. Use as derected and the motor will smoke for some time till all the clearner is run thru the motor and burnt off. Varnish from gas setting in the carb is a problem as it closes the jet hols down to a smaller size than normal. Sea Foam will work also but takes a longer time to get the job done. JMO
