Tank vent position--holes up or down?

My '71 Glasply has a chrome vent on the transom. It has two screened holes in it and a line that runs directly down into the tank. When I got the boat, the holes were pointing straight up. Is that right? Won't rain get in? Isn't it a better idea to have the holes point downward, with a loop of hose going up from the vent to keep water from intruding?

Thanks

That's the way it should be.

Probably just turned itself around with time, or the last owner was braindead...and in that position, and being in WA, I would seriously get a Fuel/Water separate inline..

Thanks for the quick response. It has been moved to the correct position.

And I'm off to buy a water separator.

How long does the filter on the average separator last? I'm intrigued by the ones with the spigot on the bottom that allows you to drain out the water once it's been separated, but only if others have found them to be worthwhile.

ill tell you to get the drainable on if you'll promise to drain it after each trip and keep the bilge cleared of fuel vapors.
once that canister gets about half full of water it can and will pass it on to the delivery system negating the water seperator bennies.
if mounted in the engine box glass and plastic bowls are not acceptable.
