I have a 1988 280 Merc., engine continues to climb to 200 degrees, I've installed a new impeller kit, housing and all, (old one appeared OK), replaced 140 thermostat, checked nylon balls going to exhaust elbows. On the hose all the water is going in the drive, so it is pumping ok. Exhaust elbows are staying cool. But gauge continues to climb to 200 and the water out the transom is scolding. I've removed all the hoses and checked for any obstructions and have found none. What do I need to check next? Thanks, Rob.

Re: 200 Degrees ???

You maybe changed the impeller, but what about the housing and all the gaskets for the raw water pump? were they changed?????
How about the tube from the water pump to the upper housing, or the hose from the drive to the transom shield, or that elbow fitting that connects the hose from the drive to the engine that goes through the transom sheild. Those things always plug up first.

Here is a link to the Mercruiser service manual for your drive, you might find it handy.

http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/6/6covr3.pdf

If all else has been checked in Dons post, you may have a broken shaft in the eng. circ pump.pull the pump and shake it, if it sounds like a rattle this should be the problem
