After 5 years I removed my u joint bellow and found about 8 ounces of oil
In it . I took it to my Volvo mechanic & he thought it my be coming from the engine side. I thought it's coming from the drive. He's going to replace the seal behind the u joint on the upper housing of the drive. Anyone have similar issues . I have a 280 drive with a 1996 5.7 GL.

Tlhere is no way in the world for the engine to leak oil into the bellows. You should be looking for a Volvo mechanic, because you don't have one if he said that.

Not sure about you having a 280 drive. Volvo stopped making the 280 in 1984 (eight four) .

Might want to post some pictures of your drive, and engine and find numbers on both.

Thanks for the reply Don. I'm sure my mechanic was pulling
My leg , he's sort of a joker. I'm pretty sure the oil leak is from
the upper housing seal behind the u joint.
In 1996 I repowered the boat and just replaced the engine and not the
280 drive. I think I exchanged the bell housing from the old engine to
the new engine to make the fit. Boat is a 1980 Bayliner and is 23 feet.

It's lucky you found it before the drive was destroyed!
