Merc 60 6hp prop shaft seal replacment issues

I have a later 60's merc 60 6hp twin. I am trying to replace the prop shaft seal but am having issues removing the carrier nut. I have read just to tap it with a screwdriver in the direction the that the nut is stamped with ( clockwise for off ) but I am not getting it to budge.. I can tell someone else has done this before and chipped it up good. Any words of advise on how to remove this? I am new to working on outboard motors but have small engine mechanical skills. Thank you for your help.

Sir, when you say carrier nut, what are you referring to?

You are correct about the rotation of the cover nut but I would be using a good solid punch against the slots in the nut rather than a screwdriver. The nut will have to be replaced anyway if it already has damage. Barring that, you could build a tool from a piece of pipe and cut slots to match the slots in the nut.

From the manual:

Disassemble the gearcase by removing
the gearcase housing cover nut (61—Fig.
M4-14). Nut is secured with left hand thread.
