I Hit A Rock. Is the Motor Done?

Hey Everyone, I am new to iboats. During the summer I hit a rock that was submerged 1 foot and it broke the bottom piece of my motor clean off.

Is there any way to fix this or should I salvage for parts?

The motor is a 1983 mercury 9.8hp 2 stroke engine.

Merc made BILLIONS of those engines. It should be easy to find a good lower unit on ebay or craigslist.

If you can't find one by summer, send me a private message and I will see if I have one available.

This is a Model 110? I am in process of selling my old boat, it has a 110 & it seems to have developed a miss that I don't know that I want to spend the time & money to fix it. May sell boat without it. The lower end / water pump was redone about 1.5 years ago. (I'd guess maybe 50 hours on it.) I must mention though that mine might not fit, the cases can be different.

Prop shops work wonders with alum. Rebuilding lower units are included in shops around here along with the center of their trade, redoing props. Give them a try.

Back when I was a teen, I had a 10 hp Scott Atwater on a little boat I built. I was running up a river one morning and in looking down into the water, I saw what appeared to be an old railroad piling that was cut off just below the surface. Before I had time to react, I heard this BANG and the engine hit me in the back. The only thing keeping the lower unit attached to the remainder of the engine was the shift shaft. The housing broke half in two just below the swivel bracket notch. So, I figured the engine was toast (with no lower unit engine was of no use to me at the time...no money to fix/replace midsection) and took the powerhead apart just to see how it was made.......that's when I found out that 2 cycle engines used needle bearings on the crankshaft/connecting rod interface.....they went everywhere and never found all of them.

You'd probably find a new lower unit at your local marine mechanic.
