Okay. I am new to all this and I have little mechanical experience. I bought this 67 Johnson 6HP from a guy for real cheap.
I have replaced the fuel lines as they were old and split.
I know the fuel pump works. (I disconnected line from carb and pulled the engine and gas shot out.)
I know there is spark. (pulled plug and grounded to engine to find a good spark out of both spark plugs)

I know it is not the best thing for the engine but I can get it to run spraying carb cleaner into the carb. It seems to run as long as I want it to as long as I keep putting carb cleaner in it.

I am assuming that means that that the carborator is most likely gummed up but I wanted others opinions first before looking into rebuilding.

I do appreciate any thoughts.

I assume your using fresh fuel mixed 50/1? Stop with the carb. cleaner as your potentially wrecking the motor. I think your on the right track pulling the carb. off and giving it a compete cleaning. A new needle and seat would probably not hurt while you have it apart. Use lots of compressed air after carb. cleaner and blow both ways through every passage. I would recommend checking your compression just so you know what you have as a start point. I just picked up a 1968 Evinrude 6 HP this summer and have it on my "to do" list for the winter. Here is a site that tells a bit about the 6 HP and lots of great info. on the 9.9's which you can learn from. Best of luck. Rick.
