back pressure

i have a 1982 evinrude 15 hp motor. it had sat for a few years. when i first got it i managed to get it running but had some fuel pump problems. installed a new pump but now when i go to crank it, it labors and won't turn over. if i remove the plugs it cranks over just fine. i'm thinking something is not allowing the exhaust to be removed. any help would be appreciated before i end up having the expense of a mechanic.

I would check the battery. Get a good load test. I've seen new batteries load test bad. Without the plugs there is no load to fight.

You might want to use Sea Foam mixed with the oil gas mixture to help clean and lossen the rings and clean the carbon or other buildup out of the motor, being it has set for sometime. Might take a tankful to get the job done, but could save a trip to a shop and $$$. Sea Foam can be bought at most auto supply outlets. JMO

Hi, boblet.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Remove both ends of your battery cables, clean the connectors and reinstall. That might not be the problem but it should be done regularly anyway.

Agree with the above but don't forget to have your battery load tested.

Agree with above. Clean/polish all connections at battery/solenoid/starter and ground. Voltage drop test the wiring in between to locate faulty sections. Ensure battery is fully charged and load tested. Should be good to go.

thanks for everyone for the input. soon as it gets light out i'm checking all the wires all the way back. seems most of you are in agreement. I'll let you know how i make out.

i'll also posts some pics of my " THIS OLD BOAT " project. :eek:

thanks to every one that chimed in. the power source was the problem. i jumped the motor from my truck battery and it cranked right over. a little adjustments and some sea foam and i should have it running great. thanks again and happy boating.

Sending you folks some pics of the beginning of my "THIS OLD BOAT" project. 1980's something Stuery tri-hull. Boat, trailer w/ power winch, 15 hp. working evinrude and 9.9 hp working evinrude plus a ? lbs thrust trolling motor. $1,000. Floor is in bad shape but we got that covered.
