Hello folks I have a 1986 Mercury 2.2 hp that just isn't starting. I got it wet on accident from too many waves and it started sinking my canoe so I shut the motor off and then it wouldn't start back up. So i cleaned it up and everything and noticed it wasn't getting any spark. So I have replaced the points and condenser with an electronic ignition module and now I can see the blue spark (but maybe its not strong enough?). I replaced the head gasket and the spark plug as well. I tested the compression of the engine and it is about 75psi. Changed the fuel just to rule everything out. I have also recently noticed that a lot of gas is coming out of the exhaust on the bottom of the engine when attempting to start. I am not sure but could the carb possible have gone bad? I have cleaned it multiple times and the engine is definitely getting fuel. Could my coil be too weak? I have 2 coils, the ignition coil that the magneto spins around and the spark plug coil which intensifies the spark apparently. Keep in mind that parts are hard to get for this motor. I have spark, fuel, and compression. Not sure what else it could be.
Thank you, Matt

It could very well be flooding the motor and fouling the plug out. The spark should be a bright spark that will jump a 1/4" gap. If it is fuel comming out the exhaust then it is probly fouling the plug and the carb is not shuting the fuel down. could be that the timming is off also from cleaning everything up from the unwanted wash job to the motor.JMO

What controls the timing on such a small motor like this? Also yes I agree with you on fouling the plug, it does get a little wet with gas. Do you think starting fluid would do anything?

Never use starting fluid on a 2 stroke Get a spray bottle with fuel mixture. Make sure the carbs are empty and spray the mixture into the carb throat and retry to start it.

okay i tried that just now! I got it to run for a second obviously because it ran out of gas. But now I tried the same procedure and it's just backfiring and not starting...guess I got lucky one time. I checked the spark and it's still nice and blue. Is it possible it's out of timing? I have no idea how I would time this motor up since its so simple and it seemed like there was only one way to put the piston in when I took it apart.
