I have a 2000 johnson 90 hp with the vro still attached. It is smoking white smoke pretty bad when running but still works fine. I decided to unhook the vro so I changed out the gas to mix gas unhooked the oil line at vro and capped, unpluged the alarm wire and the 3 wire plug going to the vro. It started up and ran good for a while smoke cleared up and everything was good. Tried it again the next day and it would not start. Hooked the vro back up and it fired up and ran fine but smoking, unhooked vro again it ran for a couple minutes then died out and would not refire. Hooked vro back up and started up and ran. Am I missing something else.

Check your spark with a spark tester when it quits. Should jump a 7/16 " open air gap.

Probably okay but I still stick with my Champion plugs as that what the OEM recommends.
