1966 evinrude 6hp wont start has spark and fuel.. new plugs. fuel in carbs

i have a 1966 evinrude 6hp outboard .. it was great to me.. i was running it in the lake.. i turned it off to fish.. when i went to start it back... it did not want to budge.. no matter how many pulls.. i paddled in.. went home.. checked for spark... has spark... checked gas.. have gas mixture.. checked compression with finger and drill at top of flywheel... felt good compression.. spark even shocked me! so i know theres spark.. sprayed mix fuel in carbs.. nothing... i would like to know whats going on with this boat motor not only for me using it.. but i want to learn how to fix outboards.. thank all yall in advance!

Check the compression using a compression tester. You may be able to borrow one from and auto supply store. Or you should be able to buy one for $30.

I will post more detail if you are really going to do it.

welcome to iboats hmlp! if you want to learn how to fix obs, and start with getting yours running, you need to pick up a few inexpensive tools.
a compression tester
an open air spark tester. ( you can build your own, but for 10 bucks...buy one!)
a multi meter.
and if you find you enjoy the hobby and plan to continue.....an omc shop manual !

also read the top secret file at the beginning of this forum.

hey thank you for responding... yes i plan to continue and some how ended up with 4 outboard motors.. lol... they all broke down and this is my only one left really... so i will plan on getting an omc manual.. i have a spark tester and multi meter... i just need the help of my peers.. im stumped because it has fuel. has spark.. but no pop... i will get test meter today and report back its readings...

Before you start wasting bux fixing stuff that ain't broke, check that your flywheel hasn't sheared the key.

Just what I was thinking.

You need:

1. Compression
2. Spark
3. Fuel
4. Timing (at the right time)

to start that engine.

I suspect you are missing number 4. JB's advice is sound. Look at that.

the op stated that he/she wants to learn how to fix outboards. that would be very hard to do without spending a few$$ on the basic tools needed. but a harmonic balancer puller was omitted from the list of basic tools. ( thats assuming that they have a few screw drivers, sockets and wrenches.....and a hammer!! lol)

sir i have wrenches sockets and spark tester now i have borrowed a compression tester... i will test compression now

the sheer key aligns the flywheel if sheered the timming will be off,you must remove the flywheel and inspect it. when you put the flywheel back on tork it to specs or another sheer is likely

sir i have done compression test and its 30 psi on each cylinder sir

i would definitly need to know how to tork it to specs if your willing to help with that... 30 psi for each cylinder is what it read after using power drill to turn flywheel

thank you sir.. 30 psi is what it read when turned flywheel by power drill on each cylinder... if i need to tear down the motor i will... and it will be my first time doing so sir

30 psi is an issue, and the method of using a power drill is not good.
