As said above Lake Placid is landlocked, If you wanted to get there by boat, You would go to Westport NY on Lake Champlain, tie up at the marina ($1.25 foot) and take a bus or expensive taxi (35 miles) to Lake Placid. There are several public buses a day that require a transfer in Elizibethtown to a Lake Placid bus. There is one bus that goes directly to Lake Placid without transferring. It leaves around 3:00pm from the Amtrak station.
