newbee with a winterize a lower unit ?

i have a question
i started working on my boat this summer and during that time i developed heart problems, so the boat work stopped for now
right now i have the lower unit off and it has been drained of oil should i had oil to it for storage? until i can get back to it next spring? also should i store the lower unit in the basement or will it be OK in the garage for the winter ?. i live in northern Illinois.
please let me know

Gearcase is fine outside in the garage.

I would personally add oil to keep the bearings and gears coated.

Fill the lower unit back up as you normally fill it on an oil change and leave it sit in your garage for the winter.

thanks for the helpful info. that's what i will do then:)
also do you think i could turn the motor over manually by hand with the spark plugs out so i can get fogging oil in it :confused:

Yes and if the carb bowls have drains, drain them.

You can fog the internals as well without running the motor. Spray the fogging oil into the carb throat or into the intake manifold if the carb is off while simply pulling it over. The oil will get drawn into the powerhead. Then spray more into the cylinders via the plug holes and rotate the flywheel some more to distribute the oil onto the cylinder walls.

Make sure all the water is out of the lower unit if you store it in the garage.
